Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player in 30 years to pick up the two main PFA awards at a dinner in London last night. The Manchester United winger was voted Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year by his fellow professionals.
No player had received both awards since Aston Villa and Scotland striker Andy Gray in 1977. The Portugal winger, 22, returned from Germany as a hate figure following his role in United clubmate Wayne Rooney?s sending-off in England?s quarterfinal defeat in Gelsenkirchen.
His rehabilitation has been such that just this month he signed a £119,000-a-week contract keeping him at Old Trafford until 2012. For the Young Player award, Arsenal?s Cesc Fabregas was second and Tottenham?s Aaron Lennon third.
